Teach English in the UAE

Tax-free salaries are real, but so is the bar: licensed international schools require a full teaching license and experience, not just a TEFL certificate — here’s the honest breakdown before you commit.

Government program
None open to overseas applicants
Typical salary
$1,800–5,000/mo (varies hugely by role)
Visa
Employer-sponsored work visa
TEFL required?
Not enough alone for licensed school roles

No inbound government scheme — and a higher bar than most TEFL destinations

Unlike Spain or Korea, the UAE has no NALCAP-equivalent open to overseas applicants. Abu Dhabi's ADEK (Department of Education and Knowledge) does run two teacher-development pathways, Midad and Kon Moallim, through apply.adek.ae — but both are restricted to UAE nationals and existing long-term residents already in the country, not an inbound-application route. For actual employment at licensed public, international or charter schools, ADEK and KHDA require a recognized home-country teaching license, a bachelor's degree (ideally subject-aligned), and typically 2+ years' experience. A TEFL certificate on its own does not meet this bar.

That means TEFL-only candidates realistically compete for roles in private language institutes, corporate/business-English training, and private tutoring — not licensed international schools, which is worth being upfront about rather than overselling.

  • Licensed international/public school roles: recognized teaching license + bachelor's degree + 2+ years' experience
  • Private institute / corporate training roles: TEFL certificate is genuinely useful, though requirements vary by employer

What you can expect to earn

Salaries are usually tax-free, which is the UAE's genuine advantage — but Dubai and Abu Dhabi cost of living, especially rent, is high, so net savings potential is strong for licensed, experienced teachers and considerably thinner for entry-level TEFL-only roles. Treat the figures below as recruiter-reported estimates, not government wage data.

Employer typeLocal currencyApprox. GBP
Private institute / corporate training$1,800–3,000/mo£1,415–£2,360
Licensed international school$3,000–5,000+/mo£2,360–£3,935+

Which TEFL Global course fits?

If a licensed international-school role is the goal, a TEFL certificate alone won't clear ADEK/KHDA's bar. You'll need a recognized teaching license and experience first. But for private institute and corporate-training roles, our Level 5, 250-Hour Course (£325.50) is the strongest TEFL-only credential you can bring to that market.

FAQs about teaching in the UAE

Not at licensed public, international or charter schools — those require a recognized home-country teaching license, a relevant degree, and typically 2+ years’ experience. A TEFL certificate is genuinely useful for private language institutes and corporate training instead.

No. Abu Dhabi’s ADEK runs Midad and Kon Moallim, but both are restricted to UAE nationals and existing long-term residents, not an inbound application route for overseas candidates.

Yes, that part is accurate and a genuine advantage — but high Dubai/Abu Dhabi rent means net savings are much stronger for licensed, experienced teachers than for entry-level roles.
