Teach English in Spain

Two real government-backed routes exist here — NALCAP for US/Canadian citizens and a separate British Council scheme for UK passport holders — and 2026 is an unusually disrupted year for one of them.

NALCAP and the British Council route — two different schemes, two different passports

NALCAP (North American Language and Culture Assistants Program) is run by Spain's Ministry of Education via the PROFEX 2 application portal, and is restricted to US and Canadian citizens only. It requires a conferred bachelor's degree (or current 2nd-year+ enrolment), native or native-like English, and age 18 to under 45 — no TEFL certificate is required. The stipend runs €700–1,000/month plus medical insurance, on a November–May contract. Important for 2026–27 applicants: Andalucía was fined roughly €5 million by Spain's Labour Inspectorate for failing to register assistants for Social Security, and has been dropped from the programme for 2025–26 and 2026–27, with restructuring affecting other regions too — timing and regional availability are unusually uncertain this cycle, so check the official page directly rather than relying on a fixed date.

Separately, UK passport holders can apply through a bilateral Spanish Ministry / British Council scheme, requiring 5 years' UK residency in the last 10 and A-level (or equivalent) education rather than a full degree. TEFL isn't required for the assistantship itself but is recommended if you also want private academy work. The 2026–27 window closed 28 January 2026; the next opens roughly October–January.

  • NALCAP: US or Canadian citizenship, bachelor's degree (or 2nd-year+ enrolment), age 18–44, no TEFL required
  • British Council route: UK passport, 5 years' UK residency in the last 10, A-level/Highers/IB-equivalent education, age 18–60 (Valencia caps at 35)

What you can expect to earn

Beyond the assistantship schemes, the private market runs on language academies, bilingual state schools, business-English corporate training, and university exam-prep work. Pay is modest but liveable outside Madrid and Barcelona, with limited savings potential at typical academy rates.

Which TEFL Global course fits?

Neither NALCAP nor the British Council assistantship requires a TEFL certificate — but if you want to pick up private academy work alongside (or after) an assistantship, our Level 3, 120-Hour Course (£169.50) is what most Spanish language academies expect.
