TAPIF vs. British Council: France's Two Assistant Programmes (Only One Takes UK Applicants)

This is one of the most commonly confused pairs in TEFL content. TAPIF is US-only. If you’re a UK applicant, the programme you actually want has a different name entirely.

Search for teaching-assistant programmes in France and TAPIF is almost always the name that comes up first — it's well-marketed, well-documented, and completely irrelevant if you're a UK passport holder. Here's the distinction laid out clearly, because most competitor guides either gloss over it or don't mention it at all.

TAPIF: US citizens only

The Teaching Assistant Program in France is run jointly by the French Ministry of Education and the French Embassy in Washington, via tapif.org. It pays around €1,010/month gross for 12 hours a week, October to April. It is restricted to US citizens — not an option for UK applicants regardless of how it's framed elsewhere.

British Council English Language Assistants: the actual UK route

The programme UK applicants actually want is the British Council English Language Assistants scheme in France — a separate programme entirely, restricted to UK nationals, requiring around 2 years of UK higher education and French to B1 level. Placements run the same October–April window as TAPIF. The 2026–27 application cycle already closed (deadline 11 February 2026); the next opens in autumn 2026. The stipend figure isn't officially confirmed at the time of writing — third-party estimates put it around €790–1,000/month, similar to TAPIF's range, but confirm directly with the British Council before relying on a number.

The honest post-Brexit picture beyond the assistantship

Outside these programmes, employer-sponsored TEFL work visas are effectively very difficult for UK citizens to obtain now — the employer must first prove no EU citizen could fill the role. The realistic alternatives are the assistant programme itself, a student visa (permitting up to roughly 964 hours of work a year), or registering as a freelancer/entrepreneur. A UK-EU Youth Mobility Scheme has been under negotiation but is not operational yet, and shouldn't be treated as an available route before 2027 at the earliest.

Neither TAPIF nor the British Council assistantship requires a TEFL certificate — but France's private language-school market, the realistic year-round alternative, does expect one. Our Level 3, 120-Hour Course (£169.50) meets that bar.
